Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Reveals First Public Servant Salary

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed what he earned as his first salary as a public servant when he joined the sector in February 1989.

Speaking on Friday when he was delivering his speech at the KICC hall during the launch of the 2021-2022 values and principles compliance report by the Public Service Commission, an event which was presided over by President William Ruto, DP said his journey to reach his current leadership position started way back in the Public Service Commission.

“For those who don’t know my journey to leadership, my journey started in public service. I joined the public service on February 16, 1989, as a DO. I was being given a salary of 3,230 shillings,” DP Gachagua said.

The deputy president said that public service is a good place for a person with a strong vision to learn and raise himself to climb the ladder.

“Public service is an institution of opportunity and learning. This is the best place to learn, and one day you will be important people in this nation, and you don’t have to look at an example that is far away, start with a young man who was a DO earning ShSh3,230 per month. Today, he is the Deputy President of Kenya.”

DP also served as Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency for one term, before being selected by the President during the campaign as his running mate under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

Previously, he was a personal assistant to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
