Tusker FC’s loss to Sofapaka on Wednesday allowed them to narrow the gap between themselves and league leaders Gor Mahia. With just one game remaining, Tusker FC trails Gor Mahia by only four points in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL).
In Kasarani Stadium, Gor Mahia was forced to settle for a frustrating draw against Batoto Ba Mungu. Meanwhile, the Brewers secured a late winner to earn three points against AFC Leopards at Nyayo.
Despite recent results, Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry is content with his team’s performance in the past few games and isn’t feeling any pressure.
“Everyone takes a snapshot. You don’t look at the games to come. Everyone has got a lot of difficult games,” said the Irishman.
“Our points per game is the highest this season, and we just have to keep doing it. If we maintain the form we’ve had in the last five games, we’ll maintain the top spot for the entire season,” the former Uganda Cranes and Rwanda manager added as he expects Police FC, KCB FC, and Tusker FC to keep them on their toes throughout the season.
“We anticipate that the last two months of the season will be tight. There are many big games ahead, including those against Tusker FC, Police FC, and AFC Leopards. However, our opponents also have challenging matches lined up. Nevertheless, the quality we’re showing is good enough, and we’re confident in our forward progress,” he stated.
In the just-closed February-March transfer window, Gor Mahia signed eight new players. On his debut, Ugandan striker Patrick Kaddu hit a hat-trick against hapless Vihiga Bullets FC, but he hasn’t scored in the two matches since then.
With an increase in depth, McKinstry has been tinkering with his match-day lineup, which has raised some questions. However, he believes that the new faces have added more quality to the squad.
“The quality of training was always good, but it has gone up a level. The level of play has equally taken a big step up; against Vihiga and Sofapaka, it was evident.”
Gor Mahia’s next match will be against Kariobangi Sharks at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday. The first leg of this match ended in a draw.
