Opportunities for Government-Funded Certificate Courses in Kenya

The government of Kenya extends financial support to students pursuing various tertiary courses via the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). In a bid to create more opportunities for young people, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has streamlined the placement process for undergraduates.

 

Those who score C+ and above in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam are eligible for 545 undergraduate degree programs, while students with C plain and C- grades can opt for 217 diploma courses offered by public colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

 

Similarly, those who have attained D plain and D+ can apply for 112 certificate courses, whereas students who scored below D plain can enroll in 145 artisan programs with government sponsorship.

 

Recently, Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of 112 certificate courses eligible for government funding that students with D plain and D+ grades can apply for. These courses fall under various programs, including Business, Building and Construction, Engineering Technology, Health Sciences, Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Applied Sciences, and Information Technology (IT).

 

Other programs that students can explore include Hospitality, Hotel and Tourism, Clothing, Fashion and Textile, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, Graphics, Media Studies and Media Production, Technical courses, Tax and Customs Administration, Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy, Library and Information Sciences, Law, Education, and Animal Health.

 

Under the Business Program, KUCCPS provides 21 certificate courses in Accountancy, Business Administration, Banking, Banking and Finance, Secretarial Studies (4 options), Business Management, Computerized Secretarial Studies, Cooperative Management, Human Resource Management (2 options), Project Management, Sales and Marketing, Supply and Chain Management, Supplies Management, and Supply Chain Management.

 

Those interested in Building and Construction can pursue certificates in Building and Construction Technology (2 options), Building Construction, Building Technology, Land Survey, Survey and Mapping, Masonry, and Road Construction.

 

For Engineering Technology, KUCCPS offers Agricultural Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (4 options), Electrical Engineering (2 options), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (4 options), and Electrical Instrumentation and Control certificates.

 

In Food Sciences, students can take up certificates in Baking Technology, Food and Beverage Production, Food and Beverage, Food and Beverage Production Sales and Services, Food and Beverage Production Service (2 options), Food Science Technology, and Food Processing Technology.

 

Under Nutrition and Dietetics, students can apply for a Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics. The Social Sciences offer Social Work, Social Work and Community Development, and Community Development and Social Work certificates.

 

Although KUCCPS currently doesn’t offer certificate courses in Animal Health, Education, Law, and Environmental Sciences, students can still explore other viable options.
