Televangelist, Ezekiel Odero, who leads the New Life Prayer Centre and Church, has been apprehended by joint security teams in Coast. This follows his interrogation on alleged ties with Paul Mackenzie, the leader of a starvation cult that has caused the deaths of 98 people in Kenya, and accusations of congregant indoctrination.
The preacher’s arrest was confirmed by Coast Regional Commissioner, Rodha Onyanja, who also stated that employees from the Milele Funeral Home had verified multiple deaths at Pastor Ezekiel’s church.
Investigations are currently ongoing, and authorities have shut down the church. Meanwhile, Thedailypost.co.ke reports that the Pastor is being questioned at the regional police headquarters in Mombasa by the DCI officers.
Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, stated during an exhumation operation at Shakahola on Tuesday, that flamboyant preachers whose teachings go against the law are being investigated by the National Police Service.
He added that any faith engaging in criminal activities or causing deaths in the name of religion must be stopped.
In a bid to eliminate cultic worship in society, Nyeri Archdiocese Catholic Archbishop, Anthony Muheria, called for a financial audit of church leaders. All religious leaders, including himself, should declare their wealth, he said.
